Here are 3 backpack safety tips you should implement immediately to prevent back pain in your child:
- The backpack should NOT weight more than 5 to 10% of the child's body weight. Heavy backpacks cause children to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight on their back, rather than on their shoulders.
- The backpack should NEVER hang more than 4 inches below the waist line. A backpack that hangs to low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing kids to lean forward when walking.
- Teach your child to wear both shoulder straps. Carrying the backpack around on one shoulder can cause disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and low back pain.
