Turmeric Side Effects
Turmeric supplements are generally safe but some people can experience gastrointestinal side effects when Turmeric’s taken in higher doses.
Some side effects may include upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, and dizziness.
Who Shouldn’t Consume Turmeric?
Gallbladder problems – do not consume turmeric if you have gallstones or a bile duct obstruction
GERD – If you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux taking turmeric may make your symptoms worse.
Bleeding disorders – turmeric may slow blood clotting which may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding if you suffer from a bleeding disorder.
Surgical candidates – if you’re scheduled to have surgery, stop consuming turmeric at least 2 weeks prior to your surgery as it may cause extra bleeding during and after surgery
Diabetes – the curcumin in turmeric may decrease blood sugar so if you already take medications to bring down your blood sugar, taking turmeric in addition to your meds may make your blood sugar too low so consult with your doctor first.
Iron deficiency – taking higher than normal amounts of turmeric may preven the absorption of iron
Overall, turmeric is safe for most people when taken at the recommended dosages but those are just some the conditions that may have some side effects when consuming it. If you’re not sure just talk to your doctor about it and make sure it’s ok.
